Best Massage School

Why Houston School of Massage Stands Above the Rest

Choosing where to study massage therapy is one of the most important decisions aspiring therapists can make. The right school does not just teach technique. It shapes how a graduate approaches client care, manages a practice, and builds a sustainable career in one of the fastest-growing segments of healthcare. For students in the Greater Houston area and beyond, Houston School of Massage (HSM) has spent more than two decades proving that it is the premier destination for professional massage therapy education. Located at 10600 Northwest Freeway, Suite 202, Houston, Texas 77092, HSM combines a proven curriculum, experienced instructors, bilingual program offerings, flexible scheduling, and an affordability commitment that few competitors can match.

A Legacy of Excellence Spanning Over Two Decades

Founded in 2004, Houston School of Massage has operated continuously for over twenty years, making it one of the longest-running massage therapy schools in the Houston metropolitan area. Longevity like this is not accidental. It reflects a consistent commitment to student outcomes, curriculum quality, and professional integrity. While other schools have opened and closed during that same period, HSM has remained a steady, reliable institution that thousands of graduates have trusted to launch their careers.

The school was founded by Jose E. Carrillo, a massage therapist and businessman who has been active in the field since 1998. Carrillo drew on his experience running a private massage practice, working at several major Houston spas, serving as a spa consultant, and working as both an instructor and administrator at other massage therapy schools throughout the Houston area. He also researched the operations of reputable massage schools across the country before establishing HSM, ensuring the school would incorporate the best practices he observed into its own educational model. That deep, firsthand understanding of what makes a massage therapy school truly effective is woven into every aspect of the HSM experience.

Comprehensive Training Programs for Every Career Goal

Houston School of Massage offers two primary programs that prepare students for licensure and professional success. Both programs are approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and designed to give students the hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge they need to thrive in the field.

The Associate Massage Therapy Program (AMTP) is a 500-hour training program that can be completed in as little as eight months. The AMTP covers massage therapy techniques (200 hours), human anatomy (50 hours), human physiology (25 hours), human kinesiology (50 hours), human pathology (25 hours), health and hygiene (10 hours), business practices and professional ethics (40 hours), hydrotherapy (20 hours), and a supervised internship program (50 hours). The internship begins after the successful completion of the first 250 hours of coursework and places students in direct contact with the general public, providing real-world experience under professional supervision.

The Masters Massage Therapy Program (MMTP) is a more extensive 570-hour program designed to further develop the experience, skills, marketability, and confidence of future massage professionals. The MMTP includes all of the AMTP coursework plus additional training hours, including a 120-hour supervised internship that provides even more hands-on client interaction. This program is HSM’s most comprehensive offering and, notably, is also positioned as its most affordable on a per-hour basis, with payment plans available that bring the weekly cost down to an exceptionally accessible level.

Both programs emphasize the integration of therapeutic touch mastery with sound business practices. Graduates leave HSM not only skilled in the physical art of massage therapy but also equipped with the professional and entrepreneurial skills needed to run their own practice or excel in a clinical, spa, or wellness setting.

What Sets Houston School of Massage Apart

Small Class Sizes and Personalized Instruction. Quality massage training requires individualized attention. HSM maintains small class sizes so that every student receives the personalized instruction and hands-on practice time that mastering the craft of massage therapy demands. This stands in stark contrast to larger programs where students can feel like just another number. At HSM, instructors know their students by name and are invested in each individual’s success.

Multi-Modal Learning Approach. HSM employs a multi-media approach to education that supports all student learning styles, whether auditory, visual, or tactile-kinesthetic. Whenever possible, the school favors a hands-on approach to learning. A standout example is the use of the Maniken for the Zoologik System of Human Anatomy in Clay during anatomy and physiology instruction. This innovative teaching tool allows students to build anatomical structures with their own hands, creating a deeper understanding of the human body that textbooks alone simply cannot provide.

Bilingual Program Offerings. In a city as diverse as Houston, language accessibility is critical. HSM is one of the few massage therapy schools in the area that offers instruction in both English and Spanish, opening the door for Spanish-speaking students who might otherwise face barriers to professional education. This bilingual commitment reflects the school’s broader mission of making quality massage therapy education available to a wide range of students.

Flexible Scheduling. HSM recognizes that many of its students have jobs, families, and other obligations that make a rigid class schedule impractical. The school offers massage therapy classes during both daytime and evening hours, and many students successfully complete their programs while balancing work and family responsibilities. This flexibility ensures that a career change or new educational pursuit does not require putting the rest of life on hold.

Affordability and Payment Plans. HSM is widely recognized as one of the more affordable massage schools in Houston. The school works hard to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent passionate students from pursuing their goals. With payment plan options that can bring weekly costs to a remarkably low figure, HSM makes a professional massage therapy education accessible to students from all financial backgrounds. The school encourages prospective students to contact them directly to learn about current tuition, financial assistance options, and enrollment opportunities.

    Continuing Education for Licensed Professionals

The learning does not stop after graduation. Houston School of Massage also offers continuing education (CEU) courses that are approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. These courses allow licensed massage therapists to maintain their credentials, meet state requirements, and expand their skill set with new techniques and modalities. The CEU classes feature the same quality of hands-on training and well-designed instructional materials that define the school’s core programs, giving working professionals a trusted resource for career-long development.

    A Real-World Student Clinic

One of the most valuable aspects of the HSM experience is its student massage clinic, which is open to the public. Students who have completed at least 250 hours of their coursework provide supervised Swedish massage sessions to community members at an affordable price point. This clinic serves a dual purpose: it gives students invaluable real-world practice with diverse clients, and it provides the Houston community with access to quality, relaxing massage therapy at a fraction of the cost of a full-service spa. The clinic operates with a professional appointment system and maintains the kind of client-centered standards that students will carry into their careers.

Convenient Location in the Heart of Houston

HSM’s campus is conveniently situated right off Highway 290 with easy access to several major freeways and highways throughout Houston. This central location makes the school readily accessible for students commuting from inner-city Houston as well as from surrounding suburbs throughout the Greater Houston area. The facility itself is clean, well-maintained, and designed to create a serene atmosphere that is appropriate for the study and practice of massage therapy.

A Thriving Industry with Strong Career Prospects

Students who train at Houston School of Massage are entering one of the fastest-growing fields in healthcare. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of massage therapists will grow 15 percent from 2024 to 2034, a rate described as much faster than the average for all occupations. The median annual wage for massage therapists reached $57,950 as of recent BLS data, with top earners exceeding $97,450. In the Houston metropolitan area specifically, massage therapists earn competitive hourly rates that reflect the strong local demand for wellness and therapeutic services.

Texas ranks among the top states for massage therapist employment, and the Houston region benefits from a large, health-conscious population and a robust spa and wellness industry. Graduates of HSM enter this market with a significant advantage: the combination of rigorous hands-on training, business acumen, and professional confidence that comes from studying at a school with over two decades of proven results.

A Mission Rooted in the Power of Touch

At its core, Houston School of Massage is guided by a simple and powerful belief: the power of touch can change lives. The school’s mission is to offer a quality education delivered by a caring, qualified staff to students who genuinely want to learn and succeed. HSM attracts students who are drawn to massage therapy because they want to make a positive impact in people’s lives. That shared purpose creates a supportive, motivating learning environment where students encourage one another and instructors go above and beyond to ensure every graduate is prepared for success.
