How Long Does It Take to Become a Licensed Massage Therapist in Texas?

If you’re considering a career in massage therapy, one of your first questions is probably: how long will this actually take? The good news is that compared to many healthcare careers, becoming a licensed massage therapist in Texas is a relatively quick path from classroom to career.

The short answer: Most students complete their training and earn their license in 6 to 12 months. But the exact timeline depends on several factors, including whether you attend full-time or part-time, the program you choose, and how quickly you schedule your licensing exams.

Let’s break down each step of the process so you know exactly what to expect.

What Texas Requires for Massage Therapy Licensure

In Texas, massage therapists are licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). To legally practice massage therapy and receive compensation for your services, you must hold a valid license.

Here are the core requirements you’ll need to meet:

  • Age requirement: You must be at least 18 years old
  • Education: Complete at least 500 hours of training from a TDLR-approved massage therapy school
  • Examination: Pass either the MBLEx plus the Texas Jurisprudence Exam, or the State of Texas Massage Therapist Exam
  • Background check: Complete fingerprinting for a national criminal history review
  • CPR certification: Obtain current CPR training
  • Application and fees: Submit your license application with the required fee (currently $100)

    Request Information

Step 1: Completing Your Education (4 to 12 Months)

The biggest chunk of your timeline will be spent in massage therapy school. Texas requires a minimum of 500 hours of instruction from a TDLR-licensed school. This training must include specific curriculum components:

    Required Curriculum Hours:

    Subject AreaMinimum Hours
Massage therapy techniques (including 125+ hours of Swedish massage)200 hours
    Anatomy and physiology125 hours
    Kinesiology50 hours
    Pathology40 hours
    Hydrotherapy20 hours
Health, hygiene, first aid, CPR, and universal precautions20 hours
Business practices and professional ethics45 hours

Note that Texas requires a minimum of 250 hours of in-person, hands-on instruction with a licensed massage therapy instructor. This includes Swedish massage techniques, other massage modalities, and clinical internship hours. While some theoretical coursework may be available online, the practical skills must be learned in person.

    Full-Time vs. Part-Time Programs

How quickly you complete your 500 hours depends largely on whether you can commit to full-time or part-time study:

Full-time programs typically run Monday through Thursday (or similar schedules) and can be completed in approximately 4 to 6 months. This intensive approach allows you to immerse yourself in the material and enter the workforce quickly.

Part-time programs accommodate students who need to work or manage family responsibilities. Classes might meet two days per week, typically taking 9 to 12 months to complete. While this extends your timeline, it provides the flexibility many students need.

Some schools also offer evening and weekend programs designed specifically for working adults. These may follow the part-time timeline but with scheduling that fits around a traditional work schedule.

Step 2: Passing Your Licensing Examination (2 to 6 Weeks)

Once you complete your education, your school will report your completion to TDLR. You’ll then need to pass a licensing examination before you can receive your license.

As of 2023, Texas offers two examination pathways:

Option 1: MBLEx + Texas Jurisprudence Exam

The Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) is administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) and is accepted in 46 states. This is the traditional pathway most massage therapy students take.

    • MBLEx details: 100 multiple-choice questions, 110 minutes, scored on a scale of 300-900 with 630 required to pass
    • MBLEx fee: $265
    • Texas Jurisprudence Exam fee: $34
    • Total cost: $299

The advantage of this pathway is that your MBLEx results can be used to obtain licensure in other states if you ever relocate.

Option 2: State of Texas Massage Therapist Exam

Texas introduced its own state exam in 2023 as an alternative pathway. This single exam covers both practical knowledge and Texas laws and rules, eliminating the need to take a separate jurisprudence exam.

    • Exam fee: $60
    • Administered by: PSI (TDLR’s testing vendor)

The significant cost savings ($60 vs. $299) makes this an attractive option for students who plan to practice in Texas. However, this exam is only valid for Texas licensure—it won’t transfer to other states.

    Exam Preparation Time

Most massage therapy graduates spend 2 to 4 weeks preparing for their licensing exam after completing school. The American Massage Therapy Association recommends beginning to study 3-4 weeks in advance, using 45-minute study sessions with breaks.

According to FSMTB data, the first-time pass rate for the MBLEx is approximately 70-73%. Students who don’t pass on their first attempt must wait 30 days before retaking the exam, which would add time to your overall timeline.

Quality massage therapy schools prepare students thoroughly for the licensing exam, with curriculum designed to cover all seven MBLEx content areas: anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, pathology, client assessment, massage techniques, ethics and professional standards, and guidelines for professional practice.

Step 3: Completing Your License Application (1 to 4 Weeks)

The final step is completing your license application with TDLR. This involves several components:

    1. Submit your application online through the TDLR website, along with the $100 application fee.
    2. Complete fingerprinting for your background check. You’ll receive instructions on scheduling this after submitting your application. Fingerprinting typically takes about a week to process.
    3. Provide official transcripts from your massage therapy school showing completion of the required 500 hours. (Texas schools registered after September 2020 report completion directly to TDLR.)
    4. Submit proof of CPR certification if not already included in your school records.

According to TDLR, license processing typically takes 3 to 6 weeks once all requirements are met. You can check your application status online. Once approved, you’ll be able to view and print your license before the physical copy arrives by mail.

Putting It All Together: Your Complete Timeline

Here’s what the full journey looks like from enrollment to licensed massage therapist:

    StepFull-TimePart-Time
    Massage therapy school (500 hours)4-6 months9-12 months
    Exam preparation2-4 weeks2-4 weeks
Schedule and take exam1-2 weeks1-2 weeks
License application and processing3-6 weeks3-6 weeks
    TOTAL TIME6-8 months11-14 months

For most students attending full-time, the entire process from first day of class to licensed massage therapist takes approximately 6 to 8 months. Part-time students can expect to reach the same goal in roughly 11 to 14 months.

Factors That Can Speed Up or Slow Down Your Timeline

    What Can Speed Things Up

    • Choosing a full-time program: The most significant time saver is committing to an intensive, full-time schedule.
    • Studying for the exam during school: Start reviewing MBLEx content in your final weeks of school so you’re ready to test soon after graduation.
    • Scheduling your exam promptly: Don’t wait—schedule your exam as soon as your school reports your completion to TDLR.
    • Completing fingerprinting quickly: Schedule your fingerprinting appointment immediately after submitting your application.
    • Having all documents ready: Ensure your CPR certification and any other required documents are current before you graduate.

    What Can Slow Things Down

    • Part-time enrollment: While necessary for many students, this extends the educational timeline significantly.
    • Failing the licensing exam: If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you must wait 30 days to retake it and pay the fee again.
    • Background check issues: Certain criminal history may require additional review time or documentation.
    • Incomplete applications: Missing documents or information will delay processing.
    • Testing center availability: During busy periods, exam slots may book up quickly. Schedule early to avoid delays.

How Does This Compare to Other Healthcare Careers?

One of the most attractive aspects of massage therapy is how quickly you can enter the workforce compared to other healthcare professions:

    • Massage therapist: 6-12 months
    • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN): 12-18 months
    • Registered Nurse (RN): 2-4 years
    • Physical Therapist Assistant: 2 years
    • Physical Therapist: 7 years (bachelor’s + doctorate)

This shorter timeline means you can start earning income and building your career much faster, while still entering a healthcare profession with strong job growth (15% through 2034) and solid earning potential (median salary $57,950 nationally).

What Happens After You Get Licensed?

Once you receive your Texas massage therapy license, you’re ready to start working. Many students have job offers lined up before they even graduate, as the demand for qualified massage therapists remains strong.

Your license is valid for two years from the date of issue. To renew, you’ll need to complete 12 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle, including 1 hour on human trafficking awareness (required by Texas law for all licensees).

Many massage therapists continue their education beyond the minimum requirements, pursuing advanced certifications in specialties like sports massage, medical massage, lymphatic drainage, or prenatal massage. These additional credentials can open doors to higher-paying positions and specialized practice areas.

    Ready to Start Your Journey?

Becoming a licensed massage therapist in Texas is an achievable goal that can be accomplished in less than a year for dedicated full-time students. Even with a part-time schedule, you can be licensed and working in your new career in just over a year.

The key is choosing an accredited program that thoroughly prepares you for both the licensing exam and real-world practice. A quality education will set you up for success not just on test day, but throughout your entire career.
