Infant Massage Resource
By using infant massage you’re using nurturing touch, reflexology and massage to promote a babies health. You will also find that it can help to enhance child development including social and mental development, emotional, physical and brain development.
A couple of things to remember before you get started, music will help to set a calming environment and reduce any distractive noises. Don’t forget to use baby oil and essential oils when giving a baby a massage. Make sure the room is also warm enough for the baby and to keep a blanket nearby just in case. Putting a cover on your massage table will also be helpful in keeping the baby warm while soaking up any oils. For after the massage keep a clean diaper handy to put on afterwards.
One key thing to remember while giving an Infant Massage is to skip areas that the baby doesn’t seem to enjoy, doing this will ensure that baby will always enjoy a massage.
There are certain Infant Massage Techniques that you will want to follow for Massage Therapy for babies.
Infant Massage Techniques
The first thing you may want to start with is the baby’s feet and stroke along the bottom of the foot in gentle back and forth motion going all the way up to the baby’s ankle.
With a gentle circular motion massage the top of the baby’s foot once the foot has been massaged start at the ankle and massage all the way up to the hip. You will then take one hand at a time and stroke between each and every finger with a gentle stroke, stroke the palm and the top of the hand. Stroking the baby’s wrist and take your gentle stroke up the arm all the way to the shoulder. Massage each shoulder with small gentle circular motions.
Start on the tummy with small gentle circular strokes below the rib cage. The last step will be on the babies back, start at the shoulders with gentle strokes down to the buttocks and back up to the shoulders again.
These are just a few tips, however, and it’s important to consult with a professional massage therapist or take a licensed massage therapy class to ensure you are fully informed regarding the safe ways to provide infant massage therapy.
