Human physiology is the study of the parts and systems of the human body and how they interact. It can encompass everything from the cellular level all the way up to full organ systems. It can describe normal functions of the body, or how the body responds to extreme stress or infection.
The oldest branch of physiology is human physiology. There has always been great interest in society associated with the human body. After all, what could be more interesting to us than ourselves? Hippocrates pioneered the scientific study of the human body. Yes, the same Hippocrates of the Hippocratic Oath.
Massage therapy training | Historical physiological discoveries
The first important result of this study was that disease was a natural process. It happened because of our environment and other elements affecting our bodies rather than due to causes of many widely held beliefs in the days before Hippocrates. He helped to define the medical profession as one in support of the natural body.
He also denied the prevailing idea that disease and injury affect only singular parts of the body. He viewed the body as whole that needed to be treated as a whole. By balancing the four humors one could strengthen the body and allow it to overcome any illness. Though this idea of the four humors was much abused and misused in the Dark Ages, Hippocrates used it conservatively, rather than brutally bleeding people or inducing vomiting.
Though this was a strong start, some of the more preventative, healthfully minded ideas of Hippocrates fell away. As other sciences advanced and we learned how the stars moved and how objects interacted with each other physiology and anatomy were stunted for some years by taboos surrounding the human body. The study of anatomy and physiology was often studied and experimented with under less pleasant circumstances.
It wasn’t until the 17th century that the circulatory system would be described by William Harvey. By the early 19th century though, advancement in science began to accelerate. Cells were discovered greatly deepening the understanding of the body and opening the path to understanding bacteria and viruses as organisms in their own right.
The idea of homeostasis provided a framework, not completely unlike that of the four humors, to map the way the body acted to create a healthy internal environment. As physiology gains a staggering number of data points, our understanding of how individual organs and systems create the whole, our comprehension of how the human body functions grew deeper and deeper.
